Makerspace Management and Makers

Administrators and managers have a duty to act in the organization's best interest. How can the users of your makerspace share in that sense of duty?

A tidy desk with an open laptop, books, notebooks, and a coffee cup. Neutral tones dominate, creating an organized, focused atmosphere.

Since 2014, I have had many conversations with people tasked with managing maker resources who are not makers themselves. School principals, local government officials, and public library administrators are often less familiar with maker resources than those wanting to use them. This can cause trepidation on the part of managers of those resources and create barriers to use for the makers. That is where an experienced makerspace expert can step in and help craft policies that benefit the makers in need of access and protect the organization and its resources.

Policies are valuable to administrators and managers, and access is essential to makers. These two constituencies can feel like they have competing agendas, but it doesn't have to be that way. I have worked with talented makers and administrators to develop policies that protect assets and organizations while empowering makers.

I founded Venture Cats, Inc. in January 2025, eleven years after founding Mixxer Community Makerspace. During those eleven years, I wished I had the bandwidth to help those administrators and teachers. Now I do. Over time, I will add helpful digital resources to this website. Learning more about your needs and struggles will help me develop better resources to maintain the forward momentum of the Maker Movement.

I am excited to share my many years of experience as a maker and administrator with you.
